First, I think I am the most qualified of those who want the office and I include Joe Barton in that very short list.

Second, most people think you have to “pay your dues” by being elected to every position from dog catcher to mayor of a city before you can run for higher office at each step along this path. This path requires the office seeker to know everything at each step which takes a long time to do. This would result in very old office seekers when they get to higher offices and preclude anyone who took a different path to success. In my case, I worked my way up by working as a military officer, process engineer, production controller, software programmer, software development engineer, manager, and technologist. I worked in small companies of 70 people to giant corporations of 100,000 plus people. I have worked in civic and religious organizations. I have covered a lot of ground over the years and done some amazing things.

Third, while I was on this other path, I thought the people on the political path were doing their job as well as I was doing mine. Lo and behold, I discovered they weren’t, especially the Republicans which seemed to be the dominant political species in this area and over the last 16 years. Since I was a novice in this field, I needed experience fast and joined in one congressional campaign after another and one state representative campaign. I took the challenge and worked as a campaign chief of staff, campaign consultant, and campaign manager. They say that nothing teaches you faster than failure. Well, none of my candidates won their office, but I kept notes and other things and studied everything that went wrong in those campaigns. I know the mistakes and don’t intend to repeat any of them. I also saw what went right. Steve Bush’s hard work ethic almost won him his primary even though he shared a name with one of the worst presidents in American history.

I think I can win this office and that is what counts in politics, winning. If you don’t win, you don’t have the political power to make things happen. I am expecting this election will be one of the hardest fought ones in the nation. I won’t be complacent just because Obama won the presidency last year. Off year elections are the worst times for new presidents. I believe I can win even if I am the only freshman Democrat taking office in January 2011.
