Current Events, Observations, and Comments

Sometimes, I have the almost uncontrollable urge to tell the talking heads on the TV what I think of their “news”. If you see something you might like to talk about, especially if you are telling me that I am wrong, send me an email .

I have three new comments that are too large to fit on this page, so I have given them their own page.

5 Jan 2010 - Christmas pants bomber

19 Jan 2010 - Senator Reid and political analysis

21 Jan 2010 - Senator Brown and the future of health care reform

Have you noticed how the Republican leadership is starting to dance around issues instead of the usual all out attack dog mode? I think the Republicans are starting to get nervous about all of the hype they were putting out on how the Obama stimulus plan was not working or creating jobs. Then the unemployment rate drops to only 11,000 for November and many economists and market analysts are saying that December will most likely show an increase in the employment rate for the first time since December of 2007. Most Republicans were echoing their pet economists in saying the unemployment rate would stay between 10.5% to 14% until after the 2010 elections if not until the 2012 elections. Now, it looks like the Democratic Party will be riding into 2010 elections with an unemployment rate dropping towards 9% or less.

Have you noticed how restraint the Republican attack dogs like Ms. Townsend (President Bush’s Homeland Security advisor) have become after the five young Muslim men were picked up in Pakistan after disappearing from their home community near Washington, DC? Wolfe Blitzer asked Ms. Townsend what she thought they were doing in Pakistan. She decided to reserve her opinion until more was known. This is very different from the situation with Major Hasan where Ms. Townsend was joined by two Republican congressmen, Rep. Pete Hoekstra and Rep. Mike Conaway, in leading the charge to have every Muslim in American uniform to be immediately investigated for being a homegrown terrorist about to wreck havoc on this country. Of course, this was extreme and hasty. As it turned out, Major Hasan had given every signal that he needed help and that he should be removed from his continued exposure to PTSD patients that were fighting in Muslim countries. The FBI missed the signals they were supposed to watch. The US Army missed the signals from his work place and his associates. But the greater wrong was the Republicans assumption that all Muslims are terrorists and should be attacked as quickly as possible. This would have more dangerous consequences to our military than anything that Major Hasan did during his criminal act. I suspect several very senior military officers explained this fact to the various Republican officials and other attack dogs. And this is the reason for their restraint.
